| Syllabus | |
| CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION | |
| Continuation of Art 330 | |
| PURPOSE | |
| To further instruct students in the media and techniques of painting in oil. | |
| COURSE OBJECTIVES: | |
| This course is designed to build on skills of rendering objects in space with color and light. I hope to encourage an exploration of more expressive qualities of color and surface at this stage. I have set up a series of problems which run from quite structured to less structured for this class. The strategy is to help me determine each individual's need for structure, since you are on several different levels of experience. It is also geared toward getting each individual to start to develop a sense of responsibility for their own ideas and images. | |
| Lectures and Gallery Events are required attendance unless there is a reasonable excuse made to me in advance | |

| Each week you will be required to bring in at least one art book checked out of the library. You don't have to READ it, just look at the pictures. We will discuss it briefly when I check in with you. | |
| Stretcher Bars and Frame | |
| You will be required to build one set of stretchers with cross-braces this semester. You will learn how to paint and mitre a simple strip frame. | |
| Attendance policy: | |
| Attendance is ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED in my class. Although I expect that you will do a great amount of serious work outside of class, I want the chance to check in on you and see what you are doing and you benefit from hearing me talk to your classmates and from seeing what they are doing. Painting is very much a peer-learning process. My policy is that after three absences I start to subtract from your final grade by 3 points a day. A missed critique will count as two class absences. If you are in class unprepared to work that will be considered an absence. | |
| Participation in class critiques is very important for the same reasons as attendance. You learn from each other and you also need to learn to be articulate about your own and about others' work. | |
| It is important to finish paintings. They should always be ready for critique. This means you will have to work outside of class, that is an expectation for this class. | |
| GRADING PROCEDURE: | |
| 70% Grades will be assigned based on the following criteria for each painting: | |
| mastery of technique, specifically color and surface quality | |
| overall conception and design of piece | |
| drawing skill: space and light | |
| workmanship | |
| 10% Library assignments will be kept track of and checked off as well toward your final grade. | |
| 10% Class Participation in critiques will be graded as well. | |
| 10% stretcher bar fabrication. | |
| Additionally I will factor in progress in the course, attendance, and seriousness of purpose | |
| Art is a field that requires a lot of hard work and discipline and if I do not see evidence of that kind of commitment; it will be reflected in your final grade. I encourage you to have a conference with me at mid-term about your progress if you have questions about your grade. | |
| Safety: | |
| I require that you never use power tools when you are alone in the studio. I also have some material on the hazards of art materials that I would like you to read. | |
| INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES: | |
| lectures, demonstrations, one-to- one instruction and critiques | |
| RESOURCES: | |
| Library, slide library, University art collection | |
| ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY: | |
| Any instance of flagrant academic dishonesty, as determined by the instructor of this course in compliance with the university policy, will result in the student’s dismissal from the class and the assignment of a grade of “E” for the course. Flagrant should be understood to mean the “knowing” violation of any aspect of the University’s Policy on Academic Integrity. | |
